Galerie Mighela Shama is delighted to present a duo exhibition entitled 'A Missed Encounter' bringing together the works of British artist Richard Burton and Yoora Lee, a Korean artist based in Chicago.

Richard Burton and Yoora Lee, develop in their own way worlds in which reality is consciously put at a distance. Through expressive colour filters, these two talents invite us to travel into narratives where our reference points are completely disrupted and to envisage a new space-time freed from all naturalism.

Through his paintings, Richard Burton materializes on canvas snippets of his distant memories and sensations from his experiences as a passenger. « Painting is by nature static and so I find it interesting to deal with imagery that suggests movement or transition » comments the painter on his theme.

In Yoora Lee's work, the canvas also takes on the appearance of images perceived through screens: blue filters and horizontal striations make up the whole of her paintings. Particularly nostalgic for the moments spent as a teenager in front of the television or on the Internet in the 90s, the artist seeks to live these feelings again.

By borrowing certain cinematographic processes, such as framing or angles of view, the artist succeeds in transcribing these distant memories, now perceived with great melancholy and bitterness. « I am also thinking a lot about the point of view of my work while studying camera lenses and angles like the perspective and the psychological effect that has on the viewers. (…) I approach painting in a similar way that the director playing with camera angles. » explains Yoora Lee.

Seen sometimes from above and sometimes from below, the scenes are kept at a distance by Richard Burton and take on a cinematographic dimension. Through a progressive work to synthesize the form, the elements of the décor and the representation of the characters respond to each other in a perfect geometric balance.

By experiencing the works of these two talented artists, A Missed Encounter, leaves everyone free to summon precious and distant memories through this new exhibition.
